Canada continues to accept Afghan refugees

Canada continues to accept Afghan refugees

The government of Canada made a new update regarding the Afghan refugees in the country on May 13, 2022.

As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 13,050 Afghan refugees. The Canadian government aimed to bring at least 40,000 Afghan nationals to Canada. Through the special programs for Afghan refugees, the government is planning to resettle 5,000 Afghan refugees through the permanent residence pathway for extended family members of former interpreters.

Also, the government plans to resettle 18,000 Afghan nationals through the special immigration program for Afghan nationals who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan and a mix of government-assisted and privately-sponsored Afghan refugees through the humanitarian program.

However, the government continues to explore other options and pathways to bring Afghans to Canada including the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot. In order to welcome Afghan refugees to Canada, and assist them in adjusting to life here, the government is working closely with provinces and territories, settlement service providers and private sponsors.
