Canada continues to welcome more Afghan refugees through its special immigration programs

The government of Canada has remained resolute in its commitment to welcome at least 40,000 refugees and war-affected Afghans to Canada.

Since August 2021, the government accepted 14,935 applications from Afghan nationals under the special immigration program for those who assisted the government of Canada in Afghanistan.

So far, the applications of 10,670 Afghans have been approved, and 6,985 Afghan nationals arrived in Canada under this stream. In addition, 8,730 Afghan refugees have been accepted to Canada under a humanitarian program. In total, Canada has welcomed 15,715 Afghan refugees under all streams.

As part of the humanitarian program, Afghan nationals arrive under the government-assisted refugee and privately sponsored refugee programs. However, to develop and implement this new program, the government of Canada is working with trusted international and Canadian partners.
