In January 2022, Canada had a record number of new permanent residents, as the country plans to accept more immigrants in 2022.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), in January 2022, the government of Canada invited 35,260 new permanent residents. Despite this figure being down almost 19% when compared to December 2021, comparing it to the previous years’ January months, it shows the higher immigration levels.
In January 2021, Canada invited 24,700 permanent resident candidates, so there were 42.7% more permanent resident candidates in January 2022. The government of Canada plans to bring in nearly 432,000 new immigrants in 2022, which is the highest number in history. Over 405,000 immigrants settled in Canada last year, mostly by becoming permanent residents of those already in the country.
The Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, said that,
"Immigration has helped shape Canada into the country it is today. From farming and fishing to manufacturing, healthcare and the transportation sector, Canada relies on immigrants."
