Greetings to all our readers at Mesidor Immigration News and Updates. Today, we bring to you a heartwarming update from the heart of Canada. During the recent Canadian Citizenship Week, Canada welcomed over 13,500 new Canadians, a figure nearly double the average number of new Canadians welcomed per week throughout the year. This significant event was marked by 105 citizenship ceremonies held across all provinces and territories.
The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, proudly announced this achievement. Minister Fraser himself attended citizenship ceremonies in Halifax and Vancouver, where he had the privilege of welcoming the new Canadians. These ceremonies are not just formalities but emotional and meaningful experiences for those receiving their citizenship, their friends and family, and all those who have the chance to participate in these momentous occasions.
Minister Fraser expressed his joy and honour in welcoming over 13,500 new members to the Canadian family. He reflected on the essence of being Canadian, which includes the freedom to live as our authentic selves, the connection to our natural world, and the opportunity to reach our full potential, irrespective of our origins.
The citizenship ceremony is the final step in becoming a Canadian citizen. During the ceremony, participants accept the rights and responsibilities of citizenship by taking the Oath of Citizenship, usually administered by a citizenship judge. This oath has evolved over time, and in June 2021, it was changed to recognize Aboriginal and treaty rights, acknowledging the rich and diverse history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Canada has proudly exceeded its citizenship goals this past year, with nearly 364,000 new Canadian citizens. To facilitate the citizenship application process, the Citizenship Application Tracker was launched in May 2021. This tool helps applicants stay up to date on the status of their citizenship application and be aware of any required next steps to complete it.
In addition, online application processes have been launched for some clients looking to apply for a grant of citizenship, get proof of citizenship, or search citizenship records. Between November 26, 2020, and March 31, 2023, nearly 546,000 people have taken citizenship tests online. Every week, over 5,000 applicants are invited to complete the test.
Between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023, on average, nearly 30,000 people took the Oath of Citizenship each month, exceeding pre-COVID-19 volumes. This is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Canadian immigration system in the face of global challenges.
As we celebrate these milestones this Canadian citizenship week, we are reminded of the diverse and vibrant fabric of the Canadian society that is continually enriched by the addition of new Canadians. If you or someone you know is considering the journey to becoming a Canadian citizen, remember that the process, while rigorous, is also rewarding.
